3 Tips for Choosing Flowers to Match Your Table Decor

We like to say that TableStars overlays have so much personality, you don’t even need a centerpiece! That said, flowers always add a beautiful touch to any gathering, so it’s hard to resist creating (or buying) floral arrangements that match the table decor for your occasion. Here are some tips to help you get the look just right.

Style

First, consider the style of your tabletop. Are you going for a farmhouse chic look or lush Victorian botanicals? Wildflowers in assorted colors arranged in canning jars would look fabulous for the former, but disastrous for the latter. A modern, minimalist tablescape might call for elegant white calla lilies or orchids in tall vases, while you can never go wrong with carnations and daisies for a traditional look. (It should be noted, though, that if you plan on serving a meal at the table, chefs and sommeliers recommend choosing flowers that don’t have a strong scent, as the aroma from roses, peonies, or gardenias can interfere with your guests’ sense of taste.)

Here are some popular styles for tabletop decor and flowers that work well with them:

  • Victorian Romance – Hydrangeas, camellias, peonies, roses, dahlias, lilacs, carnations
  • Rustic Farmhouse – Sweet peas, begonias, cherry blossoms, magnolias, peonies, sunflowers, snapdragons
  • Modern and Sleek – Plumerias, irises, orchids, roses, anemones, calla lilies, birds of paradise
  • Traditional – Daffodils, tulips, chrysanthemums, roses, gerbera daisies, carnations

Color

When it comes to color, don’t think in terms of matching. Instead, focus on complementing and coordinating. If you try to make an exact match between your table overlay and your flowers and fail, it won’t look right; if you do succeed in making a perfect match, your flowers may just blend right into the background.

If you’re working with a TableStars overlay that has a variety of colors, like Victoria’s Choice, you might want to choose a single color from the overlay as the dominant color for your floral arrangement, then add some greenery and perhaps one other color, like white baby’s breath, as an accent. Matching each color on the overlay in your flower arrangement will result in a look that’s too busy, giving your eyes no place to rest. In contrast, our damask pattern gives you the perfect opportunity to play with a variety of coordinating colors, which will pop against the overlay.

Scale

When choosing flowers, you’ll also want to match (or coordinate) in terms of scale. A detailed pattern calls for simple flower arrangements, while a simple overlay pattern can pull off both simple and intricate arrangements, depending on the look you’re going for.

Consider the vessels, too. If you want your flower arrangement to take center stage, put together one arrangement and place it at the center of the table; a number of smaller vases or jars of flowers can create a rustic, laidback look.
